Second case of measles diagnosed at Perth school

A second case of measles has been diagnosed in a student at a school in Perth's south, after an unvaccinated child became infected in Europe before returning to Australia.

The Perth Waldorf School, an alternative private Steiner school in Bibra Lake, sent home 19 unvaccinated students after a year 10 student came to class while infectious.

As well as the infected student's own class, they were in contact with students on a school bus and friends of their younger brother at the school, who had a party which some non-vaccinated students attended.

Today, the WA Health Department confirmed another student at the school had contracted measles.

However, the child was one of the 19 already sent home, so no further quarantine action was needed.

A spokeswoman for the department said the school was working with them to ensure the infection did not spread.

They are in discussions about hosting a mobile vaccination clinic on the premises.

In an earlier statement, the school said it had always been part of the school-based immunisation program provided by the WA Health Department, and received visits from health department nurses who provided opportunities for vaccination.

The school's administrator resigned earlier this week.

Measles are highly infectious and can result in severe complications including death.

Vaccines are available for children as part of the Federal Government's National Immunisation Program Schedule.
