Second case of Covid-19 in two days confirmed at Whitley Bay High School

Another Year 11 pupil at Whitley Bay High School has tested positive for coronavirus, school leaders have confirmed.

The diagnosis is the North Tyneside school's third in recent days, after parents were told on Tuesday that a Year 13 students had contracted the virus, while a letter on Friday confirmed the first Year 11 case.

In a text message to parents on Wednesday, head Steve Wilson said: "All close contacts have been identified and will be self-isolating for 14 days as advised by North Tyneside Public Health Team.

"With the exception of those students self-isolating all other students should attend school as normal."

Speaking to ChronicleLive, Mr Wilson said: "We are following the North Tyneside public health advice in terms of both cases, we have identified all close contacts and they have been sent home and are self-isolating for 14 days."

He said parents were being kept informed and that teachers were trying to "carry on as normal" for those of the 1,700 students who had not been in close contact with the affected children.

He added: "We are monitoring the situation all the time and getting advice from the North Tyneside Public Health team who have been fantastic in supporting us."

A number of schools across the region have been affected by coronavirus after they reopened earlier this month. Some have asked full year groups or bubbles to work from home in case symptoms develop, while others have been able to identify individual close contacts who are asked to self-isolate.

As of 9am on Wednesday, there have been a further 6,178 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, taking the overall number of cases confirmed to 409,729.

The government has also said a further 37 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday, bringing the UK total to 41,862.
