Second Cardiff high school confirms positive coronavirus case

A pupil at a second Cardiff high school has tested positive for coronavirus.

On Saturday, parents of students at Whitchurch High School were informed that a Key Stage 4 (years 10 and 11) pupil had tested positive for Covid-19.

Headteacher Mark Powell said the school has been working "closely with colleagues in the local authority" to ensure identification and testing procedures are followed.

Mr Powell said all families and pupils affected have been identified and informed.

He told parents that the school will reopen as normal on Monday following "enhanced cleaning" of the site.

Mr Powell said: "We have, last night and today, instigated enhanced cleaning and disinfecting of the Upper School site and the Lower School changing rooms in preparation for school reopening on Monday morning.

"This supplemented the enhanced cleaning regime already in place throughout the school.

"Please be assured that the school will reopen as normal on Monday morning with a full curriculum delivered."

Several other schools in Cardiff also reported positive cases earlier this week.

A teacher, teaching assistant and 25 year four pupils at Ninian Park Primary in Grangetown were told to self-isolate after one case was confirmed in a pupil at the school on the evening of September 9.

Four pupils and three members of staff from Ty Gwyn Special School in Ely have also been asked to self-isolate for 14 days after a confirmed Covid-19 case at the school.

Five year five pupils at Bryn Deri Primary in Radyr have also been asked to self isolate after a positive case in a pupil at the school.

Two pupils - one each at Ysgol Bro Edern and Roath Park Primary have also tested positive for Covid-19.
