Second bookies slashes odds of Edinburgh having a white Christmas: its first since 2010

The odds on Edinburgh enjoying a white Christmas have been slashed, with Scottish cities the most likely in the UK to see snow on 25 December, bookmakers say.

Aberdeen is the favourite for a white out at odds of 2-1 with the bookmaker Coral, whilst Edinburgh and Glasgow are second with odds of 5-2.

It means locals placing a £10 flutter for snow on Christmas day in Edinburgh would see a return of £35.

Last week, Paddy Power offered even better odds on Edinburgh having a white Christmas: 4/1, the same as Glasgow and Dundee.

"Our betting suggests that the Scottish cities have the greatest chance of seeing snowfall on Christmas Day, with Aberdeen the most likely at 2-1," said Coral's Harry Aitkenhead.

"It is 8-1 for snow to fall in London on Christmas Day and give the capital the white Christmas everybody will be dreaming about," he added.

The Met Office official definition of a white Christmas is for "one snowflake to be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25 December somewhere in the UK".

The last time Scotland saw a full-blown white Christmas was in 2010, the second year in a row following snow in 2009.

But whilst bookmakers' odds are interesting, the only accurate prediction of a white Christmas can be made by weather forecasters up to five days in advance.
