Second bluefin tuna which 'can be worth up to €3million' caught off Irish coast

A bluefin tuna fish, which can be worth up to €3million depending on weight, has been caught off the Irish coast for the second time in less than two months.

Fishermen caught the massive fella off the coast of Castletownbere, Co Cork, and has now made its way to O'Connell's Fishmongers in the iconic English Market in the city.

It comes after a 200 kilos bluefin tuna worth €3million was

The eight foot fish was caught by Dave Edwards from West Cork Charters as part of an ongoing catch and release programme aimed at establishing population numbers for the fish in the Atlantic.

These type of fish are not usually in season at this time of the year and while the tuna that was caught by Pat O'Connell this week is not as big as the one caught by Dave, it's still pretty huge in the flesh, Cork Beo reports.

Speaking about the previous catch, Dave told the Irish Mirror: “They are much more common up in Donegal Bay where they follow the herring.

“They are more unusual down here but tend to be much bigger when they do show up.

"This is the first one caught south of Donegal Bay this year and it really was a big fish.”
