Second arrest after passenger dies in Range Rover smash

A 26-year-old man has been arrested following the death of a young man in a tragic crash in Gorton. Police say the man was arrested for death by dangerous driving and perverting the cause of justice but will shortly be released on bail.

Officers also say a 23-year-old woman and who was arrested at the scene of the incident has now been released on bail.

Emergency services scrambled to the scene of a crash on Hyde Road - near the junction with Debdale Lane - at around 2.50am on Tuesday (July 12). A blue Range Rover smashed into a mast, officers said.

The front seat passenger - a 23-year-old man - was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. His family are being supported by specialist officers.

The driver of the car - a man - was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. A second passenger suffered minor injuries, officers added.

Police enquiries suggest that a grey Audi A3 may have been involved in the crash. A 23-year-old woman - the driver of the Audi - was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail.

In an update, a spokesperson for GMP said: "The female arrested at the scene has now been released on bail. There has also been a second arrest, a male aged 26, for Death by Dangerous Driving and Perverting the Course of Justice and he will be released on bail shortly."

On Tuesday, Sergeant Andrew Page, of our SCIU, said: "My thoughts are with all those affected by this devastating incident – particularly the family of the man who sadly lost his life, and we are doing all we can to support them at this awful time. We’re working to piece together the circumstances behind this incident and will be conducting a full and thorough investigation to ensure that no stone is left unturned to establish exactly what has happened here.

"While we have one woman in custody, we are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the area in the early hours – or who may have footage from around that time that could end up being crucial to this investigation.

"Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 4741 quoting incident 367 of 12/07/22. Alternatively, details can be passed via our LiveChat function at www.gmp.police.uk or via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
