Revenue officers made a second massive cigarette seizure at Dublin Port in a matter of hours after uncovering €7 million worth of illegal smokes and tobacco inside a package from Bulgaria.

Officers using their x-ray scanner uncovered 5.8 tonnes of ‘role your own’ tobacco and 5.3 million cigarettes.

The consignment had an estimated retail value of €7.3 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €5.8 million.

The smuggled ‘role your own’ tobacco was branded ‘The Turner Original’, ‘Eastenders’ and ‘Henley’.

The smuggled cigarettes were branded ‘Richmond’, ‘Benson & Hedges’, ‘Superkings’ and ‘821 Reds’.

Also yesterday, over €7 million worth of illegal cigarettes have been seized after being found in a Vietnamese furniture crate.

Revenue officers, with the assistance of detector dog Waffle, spotted the smokes after routing searches on a vessel that arrived in Dublin from Rotterdam today.

The cigarettes, labelled "Blue River", were found after the crate was scanned with an x-ray.

Some 10.5 million cigarettes were uncovered, with an estimated value of €7,350,000, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €5,754,000.
