The South Carolina Gamecocks fired head coach Will Muschamp following Saturday’s embarrassing 59-42 loss to Ole Miss. The Gamecocks are 2-5 and are second to last in the SEC East.
South Carolina has three games left on its schedule, including a home game against the Georgia Bulldogs. Interestingly, South Carolina’s interim head coach will be former University of Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.
Muschamp became head coach of South Carolina in 2015. His best season for the Gamecocks came in 2017, when he helped South Carolina go 9-4. Overall, he finished his career with a 28-30 record during his five seasons with South Carolina.
Muschamp was previously the head coach at Florida, where he went 28-21 over four seasons with the Gators. College football fans shouldn’t be surprised if Mushcamp ends up as a defensive coordinator for prominent SEC program for his next gig.
Here’s how SEC football Twitter reacted to the news of Muchamp’s firing:
Will Muschamp has been relieved of his duties. Mike Bobo has been named interim head coach. https://t.co/G3I7OfB65B

Many of us can no longer call South Carolina boosters cheap. The next coach will see early how much football is worshiped in Columbia.

Breaking: South Carolina has parted ways with head football coach Will Muschamp in the aftermath of the Gamecocks' third straight loss, a 59-42 setback to Ole Miss on Saturday, sources told ESPN's @ClowESPN. pic.twitter.com/w2wkNNcuYr

Will Muschamp was 28-30 at South Carolina.
He's 56-51 as a head coach.
Florida paid him a $6.3M to stop coaching their team. South Carolina will pay him $15,378,750 to not coach their team.
That's $21,678,750 to not coach football. https://t.co/LwHSCTZO8C

Shoutout to the anonymous boosters who picked up the check on Muschamp’s buyout. May your beers alway be cold and your tee shots always find a friendly bounce. pic.twitter.com/RTUrurrziG

Say what you want about Coach Muschamp but nobody can ever question his work ethic. No coach works harder. Unbelievable man and mentor. pic.twitter.com/yoi923gDxJ

I honestly didn’t think we’d make a change. Shows someone of importance actually cares about winning. Must be Caslen. Know it’s not the Board.

I will admit it’s a shame Georgia couldn’t avenge its most head-scratching loss in 20 years with Muschamp still there.
Dawgs and Gamecocks play 100 times in 2019 and Georgia wins 99 of them. I’ll never fully grasp what the hell happened last season. https://t.co/hBOD3tvZom

I really like Will Muschamp, I wanted him to be the guy, but he’s not it. That’s life. I wish him nothing but the best. He gave five years of his life to us to. Although, he was compensated well, he is human and losing your job sucks.

South Carolina officially announces OC Mike Bobo interim head coach remainder of season. He said earlier this year on facing Georgia: "There’ll be some nostalgia there, probably not as much as if it was at Sanford Stadium, but at the end of the day I’m a South Carolina guy now." https://t.co/kBL27bUMPd

You have to think with Muschamp being out at South Carolina gets UGA back in the race for the commitment of 2022 5 star QB Gunnar Stockton.

Been around Will Muschamp, talked one-on-one with him, and he's the opposite of his sideline demeanor. He's well-liked in the profession. It didn't translate to head coaching but he'll continue to get assistant jobs because he knows football and is a good guy to have in the room.
