Sebastien Haller could be the solution to something West Ham has craved for 15 years

Maxi Gomez, who?

Sebastien Haller announced his arrival to the Premier League in style as he scored twice in the second half to help West Ham to their first victory of the new Premier League season, a 3-1 win at Watford.

Vicarge Road has been a happy hunting ground for the Hammers in the last few months, winning 4-1 here on the final day of last season and scoring three more on a roasting Saturday afternoon in Hertfordshire.

A good game it was too, the Hammers didn't have the advantage of playing against ten men like they did here back in May but then again, they saw off a full complement of Hornets quite comfortably after half time.

The third goal of the game was always going to be crucial and it was West Ham who got it thanks to their club-record signing getting off the mark. Just minutes earlier, Will Hughes somehow spooned over from a yard for Watford. Haller showed the Englishman how it was done but tapping home from a few yards out after excellent work form Felipe Anderson.

That's the kind of goal you want as a striker to just get off the mark for your new employers, a completely straightforward tap-in. Haller accepted it gleefully and then accepted the adulation of the 3,000 travelling faithful from east London.

Then he decided to show off for his second, netting an overhead kick just nine minuets after scoring his first. It wasn't the most outrageous finish of all time, it was only six yards out or so but the Frenchman showed excellent technique to fashion the chance in the first place after Ben Foster's outstanding save.

Having missed the game against Brighton through injury, this was just Haller's second game in the Premier League and he has scored twice in it. It's the perfect start to his career.

The price tag placed on Haller's head is not his fault, the Hammers paid it but they will want to see return on that investment. West Ham haven't had a 20-goal a season striker since Teddy Sheringham in the 2004-2005 campaign and the list of strikers that have turned out for the club and flopped since then is excruciating.

Benni McCarthy, Simone Zaza, Mido, Wellington Paulista, Mladen Petric, Marouane Chamakh, Jonathan Caller, even more recently Lucas Perez...need we go on?

But in Haller, it looks like the Hammers may well have found what they have been looking for over the past 15 years. He's only got two, there is a long way to go but if you pay the top dollar, you get bang for your buck.

On this evidence, Haller looks like he might actually be a bit of a bargain at £45m. The name Maxi Gomez, who the Hammers were chasing all summer long before giving up on the Uruguayan, has been consigned to the history books.
