A system that grow vegetables using seawater on Scotland's coasts, a process that recycles leather waste into paper and camera-free sensor technology that captures 3D images were among the winning ideas at the Scottish Institute of Enterprise Awards.
The annual awards recognised the winners of the SIE national Fresh Ideas competition which is the longest-running early stage business idea competition in Scotland.
The winners of Fresh Ideas were awarded a total of £6,000 for their early-stage ideas and will receive continuing mentoring from SIE business advisors.
Two special prizes were presented in addition to the main awards. The first, to the developer of an app supporting women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that affects up to one in ten women and often goes undiagnosed.
The second special award went to a software developer whose platform completely digitises the supply chain for food and drink businesses.
Alexander Bowen, founder of IMERAI, and developer of camera-free 3D imaging technology used for precise mapping in privacy-conscious locations, said: “It is a privilege to be recognised by SIE’s Fresh Ideas.
“There is a long line of successful entrepreneurs who have started their journeys having won Fresh Ideas, so it is very encouraging to know we are on the right path.The support provided by SIE’s network of experienced advisors has been critical for where we are as a start-up in Scotland.”
SIE is funded by the Scottish Funding Council to encourage and support entrepreneurial students through competitions and tailored support, and to help all students develop innovation and enterprise skills that will lead to rewarding futures.
