Seattle’s new XFL team to be named Dragons

The XFL announced the names of its eight new teams today, and the Seattle franchise will be called the Dragons.

The Dragons, who will be coached by former Seahawks quarterback and coach Jim Zorn, will kick off their inaugural season on Feb. 8, one week after Super Bowl LIV.

This will be the second incarnation of the XFL; the first folded after a single season in 2001. It is owned by WWE magnate Vince McMahon and hopes to learn from the successes and failures of the fledgling Alliance of American Football, which lasted nine months before folding this spring.

The Seattle franchise’s “summer showcase” tryout hosted a variety of former local NFL and college stars, including UW quarterback Keith Price and nine players with Seahawks connections: linebacker Korey Toomer; safety Ryan Murphy; long snapper Tanner Carew; center J.J. Dielman; corner Mohammed Seisay; linebackers John Lotulelei and Obum Gwacham; defensive end Julius Warmsley; and defensive tackle Tani Tupou.

The XFL draft is expected to be held in October, and full rosters will be announced sometime after that. League president Ryan Gustafson said uniforms will be unveiled “sometime before Thanksgiving.”

The Dragons will play their home games at CenturyLink Field, and tickets are available at XFL.com/tickets.
