Searches at Royal Mail depots in Bristol and Bath amid reports of 'suspicious package' and 'bomb threat'

Searches are being carried out at Royal Mail depots in Bristol and Bath this morning (Friday, September 11) following reports of a "suspicious package".

Police say they were called to the depot at the sorting office on Gloucester Road North in Filton shortly after 2am and it is believed that the package may have been transported to the delivery office on Manvers Street in Bath.

People are advised to avoid the areas around both depots while searches take place.

Video footage taken from outside the Filton depot earlier this morning shows a number of workers having apparently been evacuated from the building.

In a statement, a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “At 2.17am this morning we were made aware of reports of a suspicious package at the Royal Mail sorting office in Filton.

“Specialist officers attended and established the package could have been transported to the Bath delivery office.

“Searches are currently being carried out at both locations.

“We don’t believe there to be any risk to the public but ask people avoid the area while the searches take place.”

A nearby Post Office depot in Bristol has also been evacuated as a result of the incident, which a spokeswoman for the company described as a "bomb threat".

A spokeswoman said: "Police are investigating a bomb threat at the Bristol Mail Centre. This premises is owned by Royal Mail, not Post Office.

“We do have a nearby depot and staff have been asked by police to evacuate the area along with other local businesses.”

Royal Mail has been contacted for comment.
