PHANGNGA: Authorities, rescuers and local people have widened their search for a 27-year-old Chinese woman who went missing at sea Friday evening, local officials said.

Led by deputy governor Phakphum Intarasuwan, officials and rescue workers have agreed to widen the search by 10 nautical miles (14.8km) from the spot where Yang Juan was last seen.

A letter has been sent out to various agencies and local people asking them to provide boats for the search. Divers have also been despatched to inspect rocks out of fears that the body might get stuck.

Helicopters are also deployed to assist the search about 24-32km from the shore.

The search party involves more than 100 people including rescue workers, local residents and naval officers.

The incident took place on Friday when five tourists went out to swim at around 6pm in front of the Hotspring Hotel in tambon Na Toei of Thai Muang district despite a warning about strong wind and high waves.
