Search underway for two Newfoundland men missing after bird-hunting expedition

GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, N.L. — Search efforts are underway for two Newfoundland men who have not been seen since leaving Saturday to hunt off the island’s northern coast.

The RCMP says they received a report Sunday evening that the pair had been expected to return home earlier in the day but had not shown up.

The men from Gander, N.L., are believed to have left Lawrence Harbour in a 14-foot aluminum boat at noon on Saturday to hunt for sea birds.

A cabin the men were planning to stay at was searched and authorities found signs the pair had been there, but there have been no sightings of them since Saturday.

The search is being co-ordinated by the Canadian Coast Guard.

Coast guard and volunteer vessels as well as a Canadian Forces CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and a C-130 Hercules aircraft are involved in the effort.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 15, 2021.
