Search underway for elderly man missing in waters off Port Elliot

The search for the elderly man resumed early this morning.

An extensive air and sea search has resumed today for an elderly man believed to be missing in the waters off Port Elliot, on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula, for more than two days.

The search continued this morning for the man from Hackham, in Adelaide's south, who police said was a regular swimmer at Horseshoe Bay, but has not been seen since 9:45am on Friday.

Police and emergency services began a search of the sea and land in the area on Saturday after the alert was raised just after 11:30am.

Police believe the 71-year-old man has been missing since going for a swim at sea in the area off the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The South Australian State Emergency Service (SES), Country Fire Service (CFS), Victor Harbor and Goolwa surf rescue and water police have all been involved in the search, with the assistance of the police helicopter.

A land search is also underway along the coast.

On Saturday, the rescue team, along with a fixed-wing aircraft searched the area until 6:00pm before it was called off for the night.

Weather conditions have started to improve for the 40 rescue personnel searching for the male swimmer.

Police said the man's car was still in the car park.

The police helicopter, along with the water operation team, have now expanded their search area past Bashams Beach, 2 kilometres away, while SES and CFS crews search for any sign of the man on land.
