Search underway after Bristol mum disappears during holiday to South America

The friends and family of a Bristol mum who disappeared on holiday in South America have launched a desperate appeal to find her.

It's been six weeks since Rachel Smith made contact with her family. While away on what was expected to be just a one week break, the mum-of-one had sent a message to her 17-year-old daughter almost every day.

She had been staying with friends in New Amsterdam, Guyana and was expected to return to her flat in Hotwells at the end of April.

No messages have been sent by Rachel since April 27 and her flat has remained empty.

Avon and Somerset Police has now launched an investigation and her family are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Close friend Tammy Taylor said: "I just fear the worst has happened. It's not like her not to contact anyone.

"It's been six weeks since we have heard from her.

"It feels like something awful has happened.

"She's quite quiet and keeps herself to herself normally. She's not a party girl or anything like that."

A force spokesperson confirmed Rachel is missing and enquiries are continuing to trace her.

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting crime 20190519-0523.
