The $2 trillion federal CARES Act — the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act — passed by Congress in March included funds to create the Paycheck Protection Program, or PPP.
The financial lifeline was intended to help employers keep people on the payroll and pay some overhead expenses. If used as intended, the loans do not have to be repaid.
On Monday, the Treasury Department and the Small Business Administration released information about the companies receiving PPP funding. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin previously refused to release the data and reversed the decision under pressure from lawmakers.
The data released by the SBA does not include the exact loan amount for companies receiving $150,000 or more. For loans less than $150,000, the company names were not released.
The Chicago Sun-Times has compiled a database of Illinois businesses receiving loans of $1 million or more. Use the table below to search for companies, or click here to download the SBA data.
