Search stood down in Firth of Forth after 'missing' kayakers believed to be safe amid thunderstorms and torrential rain

Two kayakers who were reported missing off the Edinburgh coast were not found after a four hour search was concluded with no one identified as being in difficulty.

The alarm was raised with HM Coastguard at around 5.15pm on Sunday, July 4, as the region was battered by a heavy thunderstorm.

The two people in a kayak were allegedly spotted in the Firth of Forth by a concerned passerby.

A Coastguard helicopter had been drafted in from Prestwick to search the area while RNLI crews, including the teams from Kinghorn and Queensferry, were called to help.

Emergency service vehicles were also been spotted on the shoreline at Cramond.

The teams carried out a thorough search and spoke to a number of other kayakers and water users and at that point no one was identified as being in difficulty.

The search was terminated at approximately 9pm.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "We received a 999 call just before 17:15 yesterday afternoon (July 4) from a member of the public that was concerned about two people in a kayak in bad weather in the River Forth.

"The Coastguard helicopter from Prestwick, Coastguard rescue teams from Fisherrow, Kinghorn and South Queensferry and RNLI lifeboats from Kinghorn and South Queensferry were all sent.

"A thorough and extensive search was carried out with nothing found. The search was terminated at approximately 9pm."
