Search scaled back for fisherman missing at sea

Rough conditions have caused a search to be suspended for a missing fisherman off the NSW coast. (HANDOUT/MARINE RESCUE NSW)

A four-day search for a missing fisherman whose tinny was found empty and adrift has been scaled back as conditions deteriorate.

Patrols will continue in coming days with the hope of finding grandfather Tony Andeliero after a wide-scale search was unable to locate him.

Mr Andeliero's four-metre tinny was found empty off Windang Island near Warilla on the NSW South Coast about 6.40pm on Friday, triggering search efforts.

He had set off from the Port Kembla boat ramp, about 12km north.

Life jackets were found in the boat but it was unknown if Mr Andeliero had been wearing one.

Police, SES and volunteer rescuers were involved in the search at the weekend, before it was abandoned amid poor weather about 2.45pm on Sunday.

The search resumed on Monday, with difficult conditions continuing, and was suspended about 3pm, NSW Police said.
