CHIANG MAI: Troops and park rangers combed Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiang Mai province Thursday for an elderly Japanese tourist missing in the area since Monday noon.

Searchers were looking for Kinya Nakamura, 82. He was described as healthy and an experienced trekker, but he failed to return to his tourist group, sparking concern.

A drone and sniffer dogs were employed in the search, along with about 100 park rangers and air force members.

AVM Pongsak Semachai, deputy director-general of the air force's civil affairs department, said that airmen  were alerted after Mr Nakamura's family reported his disappearance during their visit to Nabhamethanidol and Nabhapolbhumisiri pagodas in the northern province.

The office of the Doi Inthanon National Park reported the park's chief led subordinates to assist in the search.
