Search on Connacht's highest mountain stood down after body found

The body of a man thought to have fallen on Connacht’s highest peak was discovered yesterday during a multi-agency search.

The UK hiker, aged in his 30s, was reported missing on Monday.

The search was launched hours after he sent a relative a picture of him standing at the summit of Mweelrea Mountain, near Westport.

Paul Feeney, of Mayo Mountain Rescue, said: “At 1pm [Wednesday] the body of a male walker was recovered from complex ground on Mweelrea.

“The body was taken by helicopter to Mayo University Hospital.”

It is understood the man’s relatives travelled to Co Mayo from England on Tuesday.
