Search is on for new businesses with potential at the North East Business Awards

One of the most hotly contested categories at the North East Business Awards is the Newcomer  of the Year prize.

This award is open to companies in the region that have been in operation for a maximum of three years, with judges looking at the origins of the company and how it started out, the company’s business plan and indications of how it has been pursued so far.

The award also considers what differentiates the company’s products or services from competitors’, its managerial and financial performance, its notable achievements to date, and the potential for growth.

Last year the Newcomer of the Year prize was won by Teesside firm UK Pods, which beat  Barrier Ex and the Hand-Dyed Shoe Company in the regional final.

The prize is sponsored again by Virgin Money, whose corporate communications manager Simon Hall said: “The entrepreneurial spirit is at the heart of the Virgin brand, and Virgin Money is proud to support the North East Business Awards by sponsoring the Newcomer of the Year category.

“Virgin Money has sponsored this award since 2012, which helps ensure that successful new businesses in the region get the recognition they deserve as they embrace the spirit of adventure. It provides a fantastic opportunity to highlight the breadth and depth of entrepreneurship and innovation in the region, with new businesses building employment and skills, and making a real difference in their sectors.

“Through our support for this award, we have heard many inspirational stories of new businesses and, just as Virgin Money has continued to prosper in the region, it is fantastic to see the success of other companies.

“The awards are an amazing celebration of successful companies in the region, helping to encourage more new companies in the future.”

The North East Business Awards will mark their 20th anniversary next year, with two new categories – the apprenticeships, training and skills award, and the high growth and ambition award – being introduced.

There are also awards for innovation, digital technology, small businesses, heart of the  community, manufacturing, and services.

The Northumberland and Tyneside Awards will take place at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on February 27 followed by the Durham, Sunderland and South Tyneside Awards on March 12 at Ramside Hall.

The Teesside finals take place at Middlesbrough College on March 26, followed by the grand final at Hardwick Hall on April 30.
