Queensland Police have launched a search for a woman who slipped and fell into the water at the Babinda Boulders scenic reserve in the Cairns region.

Police say she was reported missing at 2.45pm on Monday by friends who said she had failed to surface.

An immediate search of the area began but the woman was not found.

Police divers from Brisbane are en route to assist with the search that involves police, SES and Swift Water Rescue, and will continue throughout the night.

Multiple drownings have occurred at the popular scenic spot over past decades.
