An investigation continues into the attempted abduction of a schoolgirl in Melbourne's CBD, with an arrested man released pending further inquiries.

A 14-year-old girl was targeted in an abduction attempt while on a school excursion in Hosier Lane in November.

A man grabbed the girl, but she managed to escape when a good Samaritan intervened by pretending to be a teacher.

The girl was was left shaken but was not physically hurt and investigators say it's believed to be an isolated incident.

On Thursday, a 37-year-old Thornbury man handed himself in at a police station.

He was arrested and then released hours later, pending further inquiries.

Investigators are still searching for a woman who was with the suspect at the time.

Police describe her as perceived to be Asian in appearance with a solid build and long black hair. She was wearing a purple puffer jacket, light pink T-shirt, blue jeans, white shoes and had a blue backpack.

The good Samaritan is also yet to come forward.
