Search for witnesses to Gateshead bus crash as 29-year-old treated for 'life threatening' injuries

An investigation has been launched into the bus crash which left a woman in a 'life-threatening' condition.

Gateshead Interchange was closed on Saturday afternoon after a 29-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured by a bus.

The woman was airlifted to the RVI, where police say she is being treated for "serious, life-threatening injuries".

Officers investigating the collision are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

They say they are particularly keen to source dashcam footage of the incident, outside the depot near Gateshead town centre.

The bus driver was not injured, while other passengers on the bus were treated for "minor injuries".

The woman suffered 'life-threatening' injuries, according to police (newcastle chronicle)

Sergeant Pinner Rana, of the Northumbria Police motor patrols department, said: “This was a serious incident that resulted in a woman [being] taken to hospital with significant injury.

“I would like to thank members of the public who assisted at the scene and would now ask any witnesses to come forward.

“In particular I am looking to trace anyone who may have dash cameras that may have captured the collision. It could be crucial in helping us to understand exactly what has happened.”

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service told Chronicle Live: "We were called at 1.23pm to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a bus.

"We have sent a specialist paramedic, an ambulance, a trauma paramedic, an officer and we requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance, who attended.

"One female patient has been taken to the RVI by air with a significant head injury."

Anyone who can help police is asked to call 101 quoting log 479 04/01/20 or report online at the Northumbria Police website.
