Search for Sunderland man Robert Smith wanted in connection with arson

Police officers are looking for a Sunderland man wanted in connection with an arson attack.

Officers have now appealed to the public for help in their search of Robert Friendship Smith.

He is wanted in connection with an arson offence committed in the Downhill area of the city.

The 23-year-old knows he is wanted and is actively evading officers, who have searched a number of locations across Wearside in a bid to locate him.

Officers are now asking anybody who knows his whereabouts, or where he might be residing, to come forward with information.

Chief Inspector Stuart Liddell, of Northumbria Police, said: “The best scenario for everybody is Smith handing himself in to the nearest police station so we can interview him in connection with this offence.

“We are continuing to gather intelligence and carry out searches of associated addresses – and that work will continue over the coming days.

“I would like to reiterate that harbouring a fugitive who is evading arrest is a criminal offence that could lead to prosecution and potential imprisonment. We do not want anybody to get into trouble on Smith’s account.

“If you have seen him, or believe you know where he is staying, please pick up the phone and pass on that information to us.”

Anyone with information about Smith’s whereabouts is asked to call 101 quoting log 362 060521.

Alternatively you can pass on information via independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
