Search for potential witness after stranger forced woman to look at 'indecent image' in Gateshead

Police have launched an investigation after a stranger approached a woman in Gateshead and forced her to look at an indecent image.

And on Friday, officers released an image of a man who was in the area at the time and who may have "important information" which could help catch the culprit.

In March, a 29-year-old woman was walking on Poplar Crescent, in the Bensham area of Gateshead, when she was approached by a stranger.

The man began by asking for directions, but then he asked the woman to come home with him.

When she turned him down the stranger proceeded to show her an "indecent image" on his phone, police say.

The woman left the area and called the police for help.

Now, officers are now carrying out enquiries to identify the man who stopped her, and say the image released on Friday someone who could assist their investigation.

A police spokesperson said: "He was in the area at the time and could have important information about the suspected public order offence.

"The man, or anyone who knows him, is asked to report it online at the Northumbria Police website quoting log 841 15/03/21."
