Paddleboarders safely ashore as marine search ends

Marine rescue crews launched a search off the NSW north coast after two paddleboarders went missing. (HANDOUT/MARINE RESCUE NSW)

Two paddleboarders who sparked a major land and sea search after reports they failed to return have been found safe on shore.

The search for the men was called off earlier on Tuesday due to poor conditions.

Emergency services were initially called to Wellington Drive at Nambucca Heads, on the NSW north coast, about 6.30pm on Monday following reports the boarders were missing.

A land and sea search was launched, but efforts on the water were suspended at 10pm due to dangerous surf.

NSW Ambulance tasked a rescue helicopter to help in the search on Monday night, with crews using night vision goggles to look for the pair.

The search resumed at 8am on Tuesday, but volunteers were called away due to hazardous surf about two hours later.

NSW Police announced the operation had ended in the afternoon, when officers at Nambucca Heads spoke with two men matching the missing boarders' descriptions.

They confirmed they were in the water on Monday evening but returned home safely.

Earlier, Marine Rescue NSW inspector Steve Raymond said conditions had been tough for crews with 25-knot winds combined with a one-and-a-half-metre swell.

The crews conducted a parallel line search from Nambucca Heads to South West Rocks, he said, a distance of about 25km before returning to base.
