Search for much-needed new school in Llanelli expanded to 18 potential sites

Eighteen sites are being considered for a new primary school in Llanelli after the plug was controversially pulled on the county council's preferred site.

Carmarthenshire Council wanted to build a new Ysgol Dewi Sant at Llanerch field for 480 pupils and nursery children.

Campaigners opposed this location and tried unsuccessfully to get the field protected with village green status.

Then, in July last year, the Welsh Government issued a stop notice which prevented planning permission for the £9.1 million school being granted.

Following discussions with school governors last month, the Llanerch field proposal was dropped by the council's executive board, prompting recriminations between the ruling Plaid Cymru and the Labour opposition group.

Asked by the Local Democracy Reporter Service how many sites were now being considered, a council spokeswoman said: "There are an additional nine sites currently being looked at, with the original nine sites also being re-evaluated at part of the process."

She said the project remained a high priority for the council.

It has emerged that it cost the authority £592,364 to develop and progress the Llanerch field project and, asked if the council would try to reclaim these costs, the spokeswoman said: "We will be discussing options with the Welsh Government as the scheme progresses."

Council officers are considering various criteria for a new site, and are also establishing if any urgent work is needed at the existing Ysgol Dewi Sant, off Bryndulais Avenue.

The hope originally was for staff and pupils to relocate to a new school last September.

Asked what the new timetable for completion might be, the council said it was working on this and wanted to build the new school as soon as possible.

Funding allocated for the Llanerch field proposal is being moved to another, more advanced school build project in the county.

One of the concerns from campaigners about Llanerch field was flood risk.

A flood assessment report carried out in January 2019 said there was a low risk of flooding from the adjacent Afon Lliedi, except for the proposed overflow car park.

Speaking at an executive board meeting on February 24, Cllr Glynog Davies said Llanerch field had not flooded during the recent spell of very wet weather.

"That area has been safe," said the executive board member for education and children.

He added: "Building a new school is a priority for us as an authority."
