Body found in search for missing man who fell while livestreaming Mount Fuji climb

Rescue workers in Japan searching for a man who fell while livestreaming his climb up Mount Fuji have found a body.

Police in Shizuoka prefecture, home to Japan's highest mountain, said a body was found on Wednesday afternoon and officials are working to identify it.

The missing man was seen falling down a snow-covered slope, believed to be near the peak in the YouTube livestream.

The video, "Let's Go to Snowy Mt. Fuji," shows a man who identifies himself as TEDZU panting and saying his fingers are freezing and he has trouble operating his smartphone.

"Am I on the right track? So much of the route is covered with snow," he says as he climbs upwards.

The man, walking along a fence and apparently nearing the summit, then says he is slipping.

The video showed him going feet up, his hiking gear hurtling away before ending abruptly.

Masahiro Haruta, a spokesman for the Shizuoka Prefectural Police said the body was found at an altitude of around 3,000 meters, according to CNN.

It was too early to say if the person who died was in fact the live-streamer, he added.

At least 10 rescuers have been searching for the climber since Tuesday.

Mount Fuji climbing season ended last month.

Aiko Kishibata, a press officer with Shizuoka prefectural police, also told the broadcaster that authorities were alerted to the incident after receiving call from livestream viewers.
