Search for missing girl, 12, ends after her body is found in river

The body of a missing 12-year-old girl has been pulled from a river in west Scotland following a three-hour police search.

Police Scotland officers were called to a report of the girl being in difficulty in the River Leven, near Balloch Bridge, about 6.45pm on Sunday.

The coastguard, ambulance and fire crews were all present for the desperate search.

A police spokesman told the Mirror Online another child was also understood to have been at the scene with the girl, but did not go into the water.

"Emergency services attended and searches were carried out," police said in a statement.

"Around 9.45pm, the young girl was recovered from the water.

"Sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene."

The child's family have been informed of her death and enquiries are ongoing, but police are not treating the death as suspicious.

A full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

In a statement on Twitter, West Dumbartonshire Police said during the search officers were focused in Balloch Road, between the junctions at Ben Lomond Way and Dalavait Road, which were closed.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said operations control mobilised two fire engines and two water rescue units to the scene at Balloch Bridge.
