A search for a  missing rock fisherman, who fell into the water off Western Australia's southern coast, has been suspended.

The 36-year-old slipped off rocks at Cape Arid, more than 100km east of Esperance, at 2.20pm on Saturday.

The incident happened at a remote area where the ocean meets the mouth of the Thomas River.

He was with a family member at the time but has not been seen since, WA Police said.

Search efforts involved police in boats, on jet-skis and in the air, while State Emergency Service members scoured nearby beaches.

Police said on Sunday the search had been suspended "pending new information".

"Police will continue to liaise with the family of the missing man and roving patrols of nearby beaches will continue," they said.
