Search for missing child called off in Down after wandering girl found safe and well

The search for a missing girl who was seen wandering around the streets of Co Down on her own at 5am has been called off - after she was found safe and well on Wednesday afternoon.

A search operation began after a child was seen wandering alone in Castlewellan overnight.

The young girl was last seen at around 5am on Wednesday morning, Belfast Live reported.

Important CCTV footage captured the child wandering on Main Street in the town.

Shortly before 3pm on Wednesday, police confirmed that the young girl had been found.

Temporary Chief Inspector Adam Corner said: “The young girl has been located safe and well. We would like to thank Community Search and Rescue and the public for their help and support in locating this child.”

Slieve Croob Ulster Unionist Councillor Alan Lewis thanked local police and the public for the "quick and efficient response" on Wednesday.
