Search for missing British diplomat who hosted Prince Harry moves into forest area

The search for a British diplomat who went out for a jog and disappeared has moved into a nearby forest area.

Richard Morris, 52, who hosted Prince Harry during a tour in Nepal in 2016, left his home in Bentley, Hampshire, almost a week ago and has not been seen since.

The father-of-three, who was Britain's ambassador to Nepal until last November, is a keen runner and had completed a marathon run up Mount Everest to raise funds for charity.

Mr Morris was known to be a regular runner in the Alice Holt Forest, a vast woodland that spreads between Hampshire and Surrey and a local park run group which he was affiliated to asked its members to check their running apps to see if there was any sign of movement from the missing official.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said on Tuesday: "There is a search ongoing in the Alice Holt forest area."

Appealing for the public's help in finding Mr Morris, Hampshire police released a description of him.

The force spokesman said: "We are now asking residents in the surrounding areas if they could assist by checking sheds, outbuildings and gardens. We would also love to hear from any residents or businesses with CCTV that could help our inquiries.

"The 52-year-old went missing from the Bentley area at 10.30am on May 6.

"It is believed that Richard, who is described as being white with greying hair and a beard and a distinctive birth mark on his face, was running in the local area when he went missing.

"He was last seen wearing a blue long sleeved top with a half zip, black shorts, and blue trainers.

"We would also very much like to thank the public for their response to this appeal, including volunteers from Hampshire Search and Rescue who have assisted us in our search for Richard.

"We would like to reassure people that we have professional search teams conducting a thorough search of local areas and would respectfully ask members of the public not to attempt to look for Richard, outside of your own property, themselves.

"This is so teams can accurately monitor all areas that have been police searched to a professional standard and so potential tracking can be conducted by search dogs.

"We again appeal for anyone with information and also ask residents to check their outbuildings for any signs that someone might have been sheltering there or for discarded items."

The Government website says Mr Morris married his wife Alison Jane Morris in 1992 and they have one daughter and two sons, adding: "In his spare time, he enjoys long-distance running, reading, travel, music and spending time with his family."

Richard was the ambassador to Nepal between 2015 and November 2019, and accompanied Prince Harry during his tour of the country in 2016.

He had also held posts as Director of General Trade and Investment based in Australasia and Deputy Head of Mission and HM Consul General at the British Embassy in Mexico City.

Mr Morris had lived with his wife in nearby Farnham for a number of years before moving to Bentley and had worked various other roles over almost 30 years within the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, including at the British Embassy in Mexico City and as a Consul General in Sydney.
