Search for Llanelli cockle picker Darren Rees suspended overnight

The search for a 43-year-old man who was last seen picking cockles has been suspended overnight until Thursday.

Darren Rees was reported missing  at around 6.30pm on Tuesday, November, 3 after he went cockle picking at low tide in the Machynys area of  Llanelli.

An air and sea search was conducted on Tuesday evening and continued until the early hours of Wednesday. The search resumed in the morning but has now been suspended until Thursday. Mr Rees was last seen before it got dark on the  Carmarthenshire  coast.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said Mr Rees was wearing green waders and a blue jumper and they have asked anyone who may have seen him to contact the force.

Coastguard and RNLI teams from Burry Port, Llansteffan and Mumbles have been searching the coast along with officers and police helicopters. An extensive search of North Gower, Loughor, and Pwll has been carried out.

Volunteers from the cockling community have also been involved in the search under the coordination of the police.

Chief Inspector Chris Neve from Dyfed-Powys Police said on Wednesday: “At 5pm this evening we have taken advice from HM Coastguard and the RNLI to suspend the search for Mr Rees until the morning.

"I am satisfied that between us we have done everything possible to try and locate Mr Rees today using the assets we have available to us. There have been extensive searches from the air, land, and sea and I am grateful to everyone involved.

"Police officers will be continuing to conduct intelligence-led enquiries throughout the night in and around the Llanelli area."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
