Search for Beeston Castle's mystery stonemason who hid a note in the toilets 55 years ago

Renovators at a historic castle dating back to the 13th Century have uncovered yet another one of its secrets - a note hidden by a stonemason 55 years ago.

Beeston Castle, an English Heritage Grade I listed building, towers over the Cheshire Plain and has a significant place in English history.

After surviving a siege by Henry III and withstanding an attempted demolition during the English Civil War, the towers still stand even though they're nearly 800 years old.

Now, staff at the castle are trying to create their own piece of local history by searching for a stonemason who left a note in the toilet block he built 55 years ago.

Martin Goulding pencilled this note when he was the stonemason at Beeston Castle, and staff are trying to find him and bring him back (Beeston Castle)

Workers discovered the worn and torn note tucked inside a matchbox when renovating the toilet block yesterday afternoon.

It dates back to 21st August 1964 and was written in pencil by Martin Goulding, a 25-year-old stonemason.

Mr Goulding would now be 79 years old and staff at the castle want to bring him back so he can see how the project he worked on decades ago has developed.

Kate Potter, site manager at Beeston Castle, said: "We are just really exited that this name has appeared out of history and so we really were sad that we couldn't get in touch.

"We are refurbishing the same toilet block that he worked on 55 years ago. It could be great for him to come back and be a part of it - we could even learn from his expertise."

Already the post has received 160 shares on Facebook, and lots of people in the comments have been tagging friends with the same surname.

Kate added: "My phone is going mad with notifications."

Kate told the M.E.N. she has a message for Martin in case he, or a relative of his, is reading this: "It's exciting to see his name as a part of Beeston History, and that he took that time to put that little note in.

"We also want to thank him for building that block in the first place - it has been really useful.

"If he can come back then we would love to revisit it with him."

Staff are the castle are encouraging people to use the hashtag #TheSearchforMartinGoulding with any information that could help track him down.
