Search for bank robbery suspects puts 2 Culver City schools on lockdown

Jan. 21--A multi-agency hunt for a group of suspected bank robbers who opened fire during a morning heist has left two Culver City schools on lockdown, police said.

El Marino and El Rincon elementary schools were both placed on modified lockdowns around 10:30 a.m., as several police agencies continued to search for men involved in a morning robbery at the One West Bank on Jefferson Boulevard, according to Culver City Police Lt. William Browne.

The suspects opened fire during the course of the 9 a.m. robbery, but no one was injured, Browne said. It was not immediately clear if the suspects opened fire inside the bank, or what they were shooting at.

A vehicle that fled the robbery scene was discovered a short time later, and one of the suspects was captured nearby, Browne said. A second suspect was captured inside a T.J. Maxx store just a half-mile from the bank, according to Browne.

Police from Culver City, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills were searching for the other two suspects in an area near Malat and Vera ways around noon, Browne said. The schools that were placed on lockdown are in the immediate vicinity of the search area, he said.

The identities of the suspects who have been detained were not immediately available.

Students at both El Marino and El Rincon are all "safe and accounted for," the Culver City Unified School District said on Twitter.
