Search ends for missing Qld fishermen

A search for three fishermen missing from Yarrabah in Queensland's far north has been called off. (AAP)

A search for three fishermen who failed to return from a fishing trip seven days ago has been called off in far north Queensland.

Cairns police ended the hunt for the men - aged 18, 27 and 37 - on Tuesday.

The trio from Yarrabah had been due to return from a fishing trip to Cape Tribulation on Australia Day, but they never arrived home.

Police say the trio were last seen about 8.30am that day appearing to have engine trouble near Green Island.

Boats and planes searched for the men across a 1700 square nautical mile area between Little Fitzroy Island and Cape Tribulation.

Three jerry cans, a fuel tank and a lift jacket from their boat have been found over the last week, but the men and their vessel are still missing.
