Rescue activities are ongoing two weeks since special emergency warnings for heavy rain were issued in Hiroshima, Okayama and other prefectures in western Japan.
About 15,000 personnel have been dispatched from the police, fire stations and the Self-Defense Forces to continue search activities for those missing in Hiroshima Prefecture, where more than 100 people have died in the disaster. Such operations are likely to extend for some time due to the many enormous rocks and deposits of earth and sand left by the floods.
As of noon on Friday, 219 people had died across 14 prefectures and 12 were still missing in Hiroshima, Okayama and Ehime prefectures, according to data compiled by The Yomiuri Shimbun. Hiroshima suffered the greatest number of casualties, with 107 dead and seven missing.
