Search continues after reports of woman swept out to sea from Sunderland beach

A search is continuing after a woman was reportedly swept out to sea off the Sunderland coast.

Emergency services including police, ambulance, the fire service, the Coastguard and a search and rescue helicopter were deployed to the scene at around 7pm on Thursday after a woman had reportedly been swept out to sea.

The ambulance service confirmed that a man was treated for hypothermia but he did not need to go to hospital.

Officers are still at the scene on Friday as the search carries on.

At least two RNLI lifeboats are currently out in the area off Hendon beach.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 7.24pm last night to assist the police, fire service and Coastguard with reports of people in the water.

"We treated one man for hypothermia. He did not need to go to hospital."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 7.10pm yesterday (Thursday) we received a report of concern for the welfare of a woman on Hendon Beach, following reports she had been swept out to sea.

“Officers are currently at the scene supported by the Coastguard as searches continue.”
