Seanan Clucas makes title admission as Glentoran ramp up pressure

Seanan Clucas accepts there should be pressure on Glentoran to win the title this season.

Friday night's win over Dungannon Swifts night made it nine games unbeaten in the Premiership for Mick McDermott's men.

It wasn't that long ago that back-to-back defeats to Crusaders and Linfield had the Oval club staring at a potential crisis.

But now they are slap bang in the middle of a title race after easing into second spot in the table, just three points behind leaders Cliftonville.

Next up is a trip to fellow title rivals Coleraine on Tuesday night, with the Bannsiders currently riding the wave of a 16-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

"There has to be (pressure to win the title)," Clucas told BBC Sportsound.

"Obviously the players we have at the club, there is no reason why we shouldn't go and win this league.

"If we can keep this run going and beat the teams in and around us, I think we can go and win this league. There is no reason why we shouldn't.

"It is just a mentality thing now with ourselves.

"The fans have that expectation, and rightly so. Look at the players and the quality and the money that has been spent, and that brings pressure.

"It is something the players have to deal with and hopefully we can keep this run going."

Clucas also insists Glentoran 's squad is completely united following the Aaron McCarey controversy.

McCarey was sent off after lashing out at teammate Bobby Burns during last month's 2-2 draw with Coleraine.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper served a suspension of five games in total for violent conduct and bringing the game into disrepute, with the BBC's footage of the incident being viewed almost 2 million times on Twitter.

"The dressing room is happy," Clucas said.

"I had a couple of mates asking were there issues between Aaron and Bobby in the past, but there was nothing like that.

"It was a moment of madness from Aaron, but he has apologised to Bobby and it was forgotten about.

"It went viral and even Gary Lineker tweeted about it. It was just that passion, and we don't want to lose. It just went slightly over the top.

"But it was forgotten about in the changing room after that night."
