Sean Spicer makes surprise appearance before 'the largest audience to witness an Emmys'

It's a night where politics usually gets left at the door, but the 2017 Emmy Awards saw host Stephen Colbert pull out the big guns to take a dig at Donald Trump.

And while it's not surprising The Late Show host would make a few comments aimed at the US President, an appearance by former White House press secretary Sean Spicer certainly was a surprise for those in the crowd.

"Of course, what really mattered to Donald Trump is ratings," Colbert started.

"You've gotta have the big numbers.

"Unfortunately tonight we have no way of knowing how big our audience is. Is there anyone who can say how big the audience is? Sean, do you know?"

"This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period," Spicer announced from a podium titled 'The Emmys — Hollywood'.

"Both in person and around the world."

He was referencing the now infamous comments he made following Mr Trump's inauguration earlier this year.

Colbert responded:

"Wow, that bruised my fragile ego," before adding: "Melissa McCarthy everybody."

The cameo surprised even the real McCarthy, who has famously taken off Spicer on several occasions for Saturday Night Live.

And two actors, playing roles in Hollywood versions of the White House, looked like they thoroughly enjoyed the gag too.

Here's Anna Chlumsky, who stars in comedy show Veep, reacting to the appearance.

And, President Frank Underwood, we mean Kevin Spacey, from Netflix hit House of Cards.

It wasn't the only crack made at the President.

Earlier Colbert directly addressed Mr Trump, saying: "Hello sir, thank you for joining us. Looking forward to the tweets."

He also took a dig at his desire to win an Emmy.

"He was nominated multiple times for Celebrity Apprentice but he never won," he said.

"Why didn't you give him an Emmy?

"If he had won an Emmy he probably wouldn't have run for president. So in a way this is all your fault."

Later Alec Baldwin, who won best Supporting Actor in a Comedy series for his ongoing role as Mr Trump, dedicated his award to the President.
