Sean Shelby’s Shoes: What’s next for Nate Diaz after UFC 244 loss?

NEW YORK – Nate Diaz failed in his opportunity to become the inaugural “BMF” champion on Saturday when he lost to Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC 244.

The welterweight headliner, which took place at Madison Square Garden in New York, was called off after the third round when the cageside doctor determined Diaz (20-12 MMA, 15-10 UFC) could not continue due to multiple cuts on his face. Masvidal (35-13 MMA, 12-6 UFC) was declared the winner by TKO, and afterward there was an immediate push from Diaz to get a rematch.

UFC president Dana White did not seem keen to make it happen right away, though, and Diaz said that could lead to another long layoff. He was out for three years prior to his win over Anthony Pettis at UFC 241 in August, which set up the showdown with Masvidal at UFC 244.

What does the future hold for Diaz? Watch the video above for thoughts and analysis on what’s next.
