Sean Payton shoots down possibility of Saints signing Antonio Brown

The New England Patriots released wide receiver Antonio Brown on Friday, following allegations of sexual misconduct and a wide-ranging story from Robert Klemko of Sports Illustrated detailing Brown’s troubling off-field behavior. While Brown is now an unrestricted free agent, the NFL is conducting its own investigation and may have grounds to suspend him.

And New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton counts his team out of a list of potential suitors.

“Right now where we are,” Payton said during his Friday media availability after Saints practice, “I like our depth at that position. I haven’t paid much attention. I’m focused on the guys here.”

While Brown’s legal issues and history of selfish antics — which cost him previous job opportunities with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders — are more than enough to keep the Saints away from him, there’s no denying that the team needs help at wide receiver. Or at least some new additions with proven NFL experience, or strong resumes to inspire confidence.

Outside of veterans Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr., the only other receivers on the 53-man roster are second-year pro Tre’Quan Smith, who is managing an ankle injury that’s kept him out of practice; recently promoted rookie Lil’Jordan Humphrey, whose season started on the practice squad; and Assumption College product Deonte Harris, who has largely been limited to punt and kickoff return duties. Brown isn’t the answer, but the Saints could use a talent boost in the receiving corps.
