Sean Payton: Saints not planning to put Drew Brees on injured reserve

So far, things are moving as expected for the New Orleans Saints in the wake of Drew Brees’ injury. Saints coach Sean Payton confirmed Wednesday that Brees will undergo surgery in Los Angeles after receiving a second opinion in Houston earlier this week. Brees left the Saints’ game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday after injuring his throwing hand in a collision with another player, which was later diagnosed as a torn ligament in his thumb.

Payton added that while Brees has yet to go under the knife, the plan is to keep him on the 53-man roster and not lose him to injured reserve. If Brees were to land on the injured reserve list, he would miss at least eight weeks; being six weeks of recovery and a two-week window in which to practice, before he would be eligible to return to the 53-man roster.

If events go as planned, Brees will only miss about six weeks, which was what was previously reported. There’s still an element of uncertainty due to the evaluation process — an official recovery timeline can’t be established until after he’s actually had the procedure, after all. But this is as good of news as the Saints and their fans can hope for at this time.
