Sean Payton: No news on Drew Brees for about two days

Catastrophe struck the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, when franchise quarterback Drew Brees’s thumb on his throwing hand collided with an outstretched forearm from a Los Angeles Rams defender. Brees buckled over in pain and was sidelined for the rest of the game as he received attention from team medical staff.

“It was a thumb, and right away when he attempted to throw, he was having pain with it. It wasn’t anything elaborate,” said Saints coach Sean Payton during his postgame media availability. “We’ll give you an update when the time is right.” Payton added that it would probably take two days for the Saints to complete tests on Brees’ injured hand, though he noted they did not conduct an X-ray at halftime.

The Saints will be flying up to Seattle immediately after leaving the LA Memorial Coliseum, where they will remain and practice for a week before playing the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 22. It will likely take time to work out travel arrangements and doctor visits for Brees and other injured players who need further evaluation, like left guard Andrus Peat and wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith.
