Sean Payton checks in from coronavirus quarantine, says he’s improving

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton told ESPN Thursday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus after first feeling symptoms earlier this week, and that he still has several days of patiently waiting at home before he’ll be cleared to go out in public again.

Payton has used this opportunity to raise awareness of how quickly and subtly the coronavirus can spread, noting that he likely already had it before noticing symptoms and getting tested. After ESPN released its story on the situation, Payton expressed thanks for his infection not being worse than it is, while also making a point to inform others of how important it is to follow government guidelines in the face of a pandemic.

The Saints coach also reached out to NFL Network’s Steve Wyche to describe his situation, saying, “I’m really good. Symptoms began Sunday pm. Got tested Monday. Results today. Fortunately no respiratory issues. No high fever.” The combination of Payton’s personal health and the lack of serious symptoms mean he should experience a full recovery. But he’s been careful to note that many people afflicted by the coronavirus are not so lucky.
