Sean Miller tells reporter to ‘drive back to Phoenix’ after fair question about NCAA hoops trial

Arizona coach Sean Miller has seen his program fall under federal scrutiny the past couple years with ex-assistant coach Emanuel “Book” Richardson reaching a plea deal in the FBI college basketball investigation.

On Monday, Yahoo Sports reported that Miller and LSU coach Will Wade expect to be subpoenaed for the April 22 federal trial. Given that Miller was tied to a $100,000 offer to Deandre Ayton in a disputed wiretap report, the possible subpoena raises even more questions about the Arizona basketball program.

So, ABC 15 reporter Mike Pelton did what reporters are expected to do. He drove to Tucson on Tuesday to ask Miller the tough questions. But before Pelton could even finish asking about the reported subpoena, Miller cut him off.

Miller said:

“No comment. You can drive back to Phoenix.”

Miller has dodged basically any question about the FBI investigation and federal trial since this season started. Two weeks ago, he was asked about the likelihood of a subpoena and ended his postgame press conference right there.

But Tuesday appeared to be the first time that Miller grew combative in his response to a journalist’s reasonable question.

Miller missed last season’s game against Oregon as the school looked into the wiretap report. He returned for the following game against Stanford.
