Sean McVay uncertain of what Cam Akers’ workload will look like

Cam Akers has defied all odds to make a return this season for the Los Angeles Rams. The second-year back tore his Achilles back in July, causing most to believe that he’d be rehabbing for the start of the 2022 campaign.

But after working tirelessly for months to get back on the field, Akers is set to make his season debut for the Rams on Sunday versus the San Francisco 49ers. While speaking about Akers’ anticipated return with J.B Long and D’Marco Farr on the “Coach McVay Show,” Sean McVay said he’s uncertain of what Akers’ workload will look like in his first game back.

“Cam deserves a lot of credit. This is a special guy who is a special player and getting him back will definitely give us a boost,” McVay said. “What that workload looks like and how it works? I can’t answer that quite yet but I do expect him to be able to contribute in some form or fashion on Sunday against the 49ers.”

It’s always a welcome sight to get a player of Akers’ caliber back in the offense, especially at this time of year. That being said, it remains to be seen how Akers will rotate with Sony Michel, who has been a key cog for LA over the past five weeks.

Also, Darrell Henderson Jr. figures to have a role in the offense still once he returns from IR, giving the Rams three capable running backs in time for the postseason. Akers hasn’t played since the NFC Divisional Round game against the Green Bay Packers last January, so it should be expected for him to be eased back into action.

Sunday’s game versus the 49ers is going to be an emotional one as fans will unquestionably be excited to see Akers return to the field for the Rams. We’ll have to wait until the game begins, though, to see how McVay plans on deploying Akers and the other running backs moving forward.
