Sean McVay tricked Kliff Kingsbury into believing he could lose top pick

Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury has a personal relationship with Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay. Sometime during the offseason, the two got together for dinner and had Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes with them. Kingsbury, of course, coached Mahomes in college at Texas Tech.

During that dinner, McVay pulled a prank on the rookie head coach, making him believe he could lose the first overall pick because of tampering.

He told the story on the Adam Schefter podcast.

“We have a mutual friend that I put his name in my phone as (NFL commissioner) Roger Goodell, McVay explained. “I had this friend send me a text saying, ‘I can’t believe you’re at dinner with Kingsbury and Mahomes. you know better than this. This is tampering. You’re both losing picks.’

“I showed Kliff the text and he saw a ghost. I said, ‘You better call (Cardinals general manager) Steve Keim right away.’ He said, ‘I thought I was going to lose the No. 1 pick.’

“We couldn’t let it go too long, but it was pretty good.”

McVay said the prank came up in a recent conversation between the two and Kinsgbury vowed to get McVay back.

McVay said ultimately everyone had a good time and it was all legal, but did add one thing about the Cardinals potentially losing the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

“I wouldn’t be upset about that.”
